By the way, Javascript is not programming per se. It's similar to the early versions of VBA for macro recording.

| IBM ONLINE COURSES (Free) |
IBM offers several free (it bears repeating - free) online courses for Java including Basics and Applets. These courses can be viewed with Internet Explorer, however they work best with Netscape Communicator because IBM has a downloadable Netscape-only plugin (Bamba for Java) that streams audio/video to the Netscape browser desktop, whereas if you use Internet Explorer the audio/video is missing. This is one time where Aunty recommends you switch to Netscape Communicator before travelling to this site so that you can download the stream plugin before registering for a course. An added benefit of this course is that you can take it online or download it to work on it offline. Be forewarned! The download size of the course is 5.7 megs and the Bambi plugin is 875K. Worth the time and effort. |

SUN ONLINE COURSES (Free) |
Sun's Policy: "...Anyone is permitted [to] have a copy of the online tutorial as long as it's visible only within their own institution (university, business, or whatever) and no one is profiting from the tutorial's distribution.[They]'ve taken this strict position because the many tutorial mirrors mean that search engines generally don't find the most up-to-date version of the tutorial. Instead, search engines find mirror sites, which invariably fall behind. [They] end up getting e-mail about problems that have been corrected in newer versions of the tutorial. Or perhaps worse, [they] don't get e-mail and the reputation of the tutorial suffers. [They] allow local copies because [they] realize that browsing java.sun.com isn't always practical." Aunty applauds both Sun and IBM for their generous donation of these lessons to the general public. |

Karl Hörnell's Applet Samples (Free) |
Karl says: "You can copy whatever applet you want from here (with the exception of 3D-Blox, Autocrazy/Car Jam and Adios, Amoebas! which I have sold and no longer own the rights to) as long as you make sure to include my name and a link to my homepage. Apart from that, you may regard these programs as freeware. However, if you intend to use the applet for commercial purposes (books, CDs, sponsored sites, etc.) I want to be notified in advance."These are good examples of game applets. Frankly, Aunty strongly disapproves of computer games, her philosophy being that "life is too goldurn short for games of any kind", but she thinks these applets will teach the users something. Sometimes you have to hunt a bit, but he's made all the source code downloadable too. |
